BLS Healthcare Provider CPR is a common prerequisite for anyone going into the healthcare or emergency response field. For active healthcare professionals, BLS renewal courses are also an option if you have an AHA BLS certification card that needs to be renewed.
Comprehensive BLS training will give healthcare providers the confidence to render not only CPR in cardiac arrest but to also use the AED (Automatic Defibrillator) and provide life-saving recognition and treatment of choking emergencies and other life threatening situations in a healthcare setting.
The Basic First Aid course teaches students how to perform basic first aid for life threatening medical emergencies and injuries including fractures, burns, falls, shock, bleeding, strokes, diabetes, and seizures.

What is BLS & First Aid?
Basic Life Support (BLS) is CPR training for the healthcare provider. Unlike general-level (layperson) CPR training, BLS covers American Heart Association guidelines for CPR providers in a healthcare setting. AHA BLS courses always include the latest ECC and American Heart Association guidelines on how to perform Basic Life Support (BLS), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and use the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) on cardiac arrest victims of all ages. It also entails multi-rescuer scenarios with team dynamics for hospital or advanced settings, as well as the use of BVMs (bag valve masks) in resuscitation.
The course can sometimes be taken fully in-person or as a blended (half online half in-person) through AHA’s HeartCode ® program. It is important to note that American Heart Association BLS classes always require an in-person component and cannot be completed solely online.
FAQ’s
Do you provide American Heart Association (AHA) cards for Healthcare Professionals?
Yes! Professional CPR is an authorized American Heart Association training site. We provide the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification with the AHA logo on the card!
What is the difference between BLS and CPR?
BLS is Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers. It’s basically healthcare level CPR specifically for doctors, nurses, EMT’s, dentists, dental hygienist, or any other profession in the health care field.
General-Level CPR is training for non-healthcare providers such as teachers, construction workers, and the general public. This CPR training is the introductory level class that teaches the basic skills of CPR to empower and increase the confidence of basic rescuers to perform CPR in everyday emergencies.
Do I have to have the BLS textbook?
Yes. The American Heart Association requires all students to have their own copy of the BLS textbook (sometimes called the BLS student manual or handbook) with them at their BLS class. Books must be the most recent guidelines, which is currently GL2020. You are welcome to bring a textbook with you to class or purchase one at registration. Books may be physical or digital, but you have a digital copy you will need to be able to access it during class.
Do you offer Continuing Education (CE) Units?
Yes. All BLS courses are eligible for CEs for Emergency Medical Services personnel in California through the American Heart Association. In order to receive these credits you must complete a BLS course and claim your CE on the AHA website.
The Dental Board of California automatically provides 4 CEUs for our American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification. You must simply retain you BLS card with the AHA logo on it in the event you are audited. The Dental board will NOT accept any CE paperwork other than the AHA certification.
CNA – The CA Board of Nursing does not accept CEs for BLS courses. Please refer to their site here for additional information and a list of courses approved for nursing CE: https://www.rn.ca.gov/licensees/ce-renewal.shtml
What should I wear?
Class involves hands-on practice so it is best if you wear comfortable clothes that you can move around in. You will be on the floor and bending a lot during practice. If you have long hair, it’s best to wear it back.
Do I need to take First Aid with my BLS?
Normally most healthcare positions don’t require Basic First Aid training certifications for employment, however it’s always best to check on your requirements prior to enrolling in a course.
Will BLS and First Aid be one certification?
No, the BLS eCard and the First Aid eCard will be separate certifications. BLS is certified through AHA and First Aid is certified through Am. Health, so these certifications are processed differently. They will arrive in separate emails within 1 day of your class.
